Vision and Mission
In Yishun Secondary School, the Student Leadership programme aims to contribute to the development of our students as Capable, Creative, and Compassionate Leaders. Our student leaders are empowered to embody the school’s spirit through their daily actions and influence. By nurturing these leaders to exemplify our school values, we prepare them to actively contribute to society, ensuring they play a tangible role in improving the lives of those in the community they serve.
A Tiered Approach to Leadership Development
The Student Leadership Curriculum is designed around the Five Practices in Kouzes and Posner’s ‘The Leadership Challenge’. Structured as a progressive journey, our curriculum is designed to meet the developmental needs of our students at every level. Students are given opportunities to develop attributes and deepen their learning at various platforms.
Secondary 1: Leader of Self
Through self-discovery modules incorporated into the Secondary 1 Camp, students are challenged to develop personal independence and resilience.
Secondary 2: Leader of Others
Building upon personal mastery, the Secondary 2 leadership programme shifts toward preparing students for the complexities of peer influence and team dynamics. It equips them with key competencies to take on expanded responsibilities as they transit into leadership roles in the upper secondary years.
Upper Secondary
Students are appointed to leadership positions within the Prefectorial Board, Peer Support Leaders and CCA executive committee. Our student leaders engage in meaningful learning experiences and spearhead initiatives supported by teacher mentors that serve the wider school community.
Class Committee
At the heart of our school’s vibrant student life is the Class Committee, a dedicated team of student leaders committed to fostering a positive classroom environment and strengthening class spirit.
Class Monitors are the student representatives of each class. They are the bridge between the teachers and their classmates. They maintain a positive learning environment and are key communicators to uphold class unity.
CCE Champions advocate for our school values by leading class Values-in-action (VIA) projects and spearhead National Education commemorative events.
Eco-Stewards drive sustainability efforts through school-wide and community environment initiatives such as Green Week and Green Day in the community to foster an eco-conscious community.
Health Champions advocate for healthy and active living. They support PE lessons and facilitate major school sporting events like Cross-country and Inter-class games.
CCA Leaders
Our CCA leaders are selected by their teachers following a period of observation. The CCA leaders are provided with diverse developmental platforms by their teachers-in-charge and CCA coaches, tailored to hone the specific key competencies required for their respective CCA. CCA leaders are key to nurturing a deep sense of belonging and team spirit. By mentoring their juniors and modeling excellence, they create a supportive yet disciplined environment where character and skill are developed.
